Michael BarrMichael Barr
(Line, Judge) 


Internationally known choreographer, Michael Barr, brings his own kind of energy to the dance floor — an energy that connects, inspires, and engages all who are present!  His teaching techniques display a deep love for people, which makes him perfect for the job.  For the last 15 years, Michael has traveled and taught throughout the United States, Canada, England, France, Australia, Japan, and Korea.  Some popular dances: Black Dresses, What’s Your Name, Hey Bruce, Doors of Life, Rain Against My Window, Drinking Wine, and I Wanna.


Michael will be teaching the line dances “I Wanna” (Friday), “Love Repeats” (Friday), and “Louisiana Sailor” (Friday), as well as serving as a judge for the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).

Michele BurtonMichele Burton
(Line, Judge) 


Internationally known choreographer Michele Burton brings a sense of style and grace to the dance floor.  Students benefit from the modest attention to styling and technique she incorporates into each lesson.  With a quiet, caring personality, Michele seeks to provide a positive experience for all who meet and dance with her.  For the past 15 years, Michele has traveled and taught throughout the United States, Canada, England, France, Australia, Japan, and Korea.  Some of her dances you may recognize are American Pop, Go Greased Lightning, Zenyatta’s Waltz, Rumba Breeze, and Pink Martini (w/ Michele Perron).


Michele will be teaching the line dance “On A Saturday Night” (Friday) and Line Dance Styling (Saturday), as well as serving as a judge for the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).

Alison CockrillAlison Cockrill
(Couples) 


Alison Cockrill began formal dance training at age 4, and a professional performing career in 1987.  She has performed works by and toured internationally with modern dance choreographers Wade Madsen and Pat Graney.  She fell in love with salsa after a trip to Guatemala in the mid-nineties and has been teaching at The Century Ballroom since 1999.  She began teaching Bachata in 2008 and started Seattle first and only “Bachata Social” on Wednesday nights at the Ballroom.


Alison will be teaching Bachata (Friday).

Rick DominguezRick Dominguez
(Line) 


Rick Dominguez has been a country DJ for nearly 20 years and has beenchoreographing line dances and routines for The L.A. Wranglers for nearly 15 years now!  With noted line dances such as “Crossing the Border”, “Buttons”, “Tic Toc”, and “Bad Romance”, just to name a few, Rick is very excited to be part of the Emerald City Hoedown and ready to bring a new dance to the dance floor!  Aside from his regular gig every ThursdayFriday, and Saturday at Oil Can Harry’s in Studio City, Rick will be gearing up for our Second Annual Wrangler Weekend Country Dance Workshop and Bal, taking place Labor Day weekend (Aug. 29–Sep. 1), so be sure and look for all the information coming soon.


Rick will be teaching the line dance “So Done” (Saturday) and an additional line dance TBD (Sunday).

Edie DriskillEdie Driskill
(Line) 


Edie Driskill lives and dances in Columbus, Ohio, where she run three weekly dances and teaches five classes (from newcomer to advanced).  She has taught thousands of students in her 10 years as a line dance professional and now teaches thousands more online through her website, LineLessons.com.  As the publisher of this comprehensive site, she has gathered the top choreographers and instructors in the sport to bring dancers everywhere the highest caliber instruction on the web.


Ediewill be teaching the line dances “Give It A Go” (Saturday), “Crazy Girl” (Saturday), “Straight to Memphis” (Saturday), and Pontoon (Saturday, replacing Marek Kociolek).

nameJim Drew
(Couples, DJ Musicality) 


Jim has been dancing country-western since 1990 and teaching since 1994.  During the 1990s, he danced with the San Jose Spurs and the San Francisco Saddletramps performing teams and taught at the Rawhide II.  After moving to Seattle, he co-founded the Rain City Rhythm Riders dance team and Rain Country Dance Association.  He taught at the Timberline and Timberline Spirits, and currently teaches and DJs for Rain Country.  He also teaches Two-Step workshops each fall at Sundance Stompede in San Francisco, and has taught and DJed at several IAGLCWDC conventions.  Jim won two gold medals in Intermediate Line Dance at the 2nd World OutGames in Copenhagen in 2009.


Jim will be teaching DJ Musicality (2 hours, Friday), San Francisco-Style Two-Step (Friday), Night Club (Friday), and Night Club (Saturday).

Christa ErwinChrista Erwin
(Line) 


Christa Erwin has been country-western and line dancing for 20 or so of the last 25 years.  She was an original member of the Rain City Rhythm Riders.  She has become a devoted line dancer, traveling to national line dance conferences, teaching for Rain Country at the Cuff, and has taught her own classes at a community center in Seattle.  She is certified as a Level III instructor with the National Teachers Association for Country Western dancing.


Christa will be teaching the line dance “Next to Me” (Friday).

Terry FeltsTerry Felts
(Couples, Foot Care) 


Terry Felts has been dancing for going on eight years now, having started at Timberline Spirits.  Once she started dancing, she was hooked!  Terry loves both line and couples dancing.  Having traveled to San Francisco, Reno, and San Diego for more dance adventures, she has branched into teaching to share this fun and camaraderie with others.  She has also performed with the Rain City Rhythm Riders.  Mostly, she is proud to be a member and supporting cast of the Rain Country Dance Association.


Terry will be teaching Waltz (Friday), Foot Care (Friday), and San Francisco-Style Two-Step (Sunday).

Lee FoxLee Fox
(Couples, Judge) 


Lee Fox is originally from Georgia and moved to Florida in 1986.  He is the Competition Director and former Director of Dance for the International Association of Gay/Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs (IAGLCWDC).  He has been teaching Ballroom, Latin, and Disco since 1978, and Country/Western since 1991.  He is a member of Southern Country South Florida and served as the choreographer/instructor for the Dream Team and the SunDancers, and he is also one of the original members of Crossfire.  He and his country partner, Chris, were the first Championship winners in the IAGLCWDC Couples Competition in 1998.


Lee will be teaching Progressive Two-Step (Friday) and is head judge for the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).

Sid GrantSid Grant
(Couples) 


Sid “el tangringo” Grant had been partner dancing professionally for over 20 years, dedicating the last decade to Argentine Tango.  In 2011, he captured the USA Tango Championship in New York, the 1st time an openly gay man ever won.  Last November, he was Guest of Honor at the 6th Annual TANGO QUEER Festival in Buenos Aires.  Sid is thrilled to be a part of the global same-sex tango community as it continues to grow and expand.  Don’t miss the opportunity to learn this passionate, sensual dance!

 


Sid will be teaching Tango (Friday) and Cha Cha (Saturday).

Michel GuimondMichel Guimond
(Couples, Judge) 


Michel started ballroom dancing in Laval, QC, Canada and competed as a junior amateur in 1969.  Started teaching in late 1976.  He became a professional competitor in 1980.  Took his first dance instructor certification from La Corporation des Professeurs de Dance du Québec in ’92 in both Latin and Standard.  He served as President of the Canadian Dance Teacher’s Association in ’94-’95 in Alberta. Ballroom Chairman for the CDTA, BC Branch.  A CDF Certified judge, he has officiated as Chairman of Judges in countless Canadian Closed Amateur and Professional Championships and International events.  He started dancing C&W with Timberline, Vancouver, Canada in Nov. 2009.  He has taught some of the couple dances with Timberline.  He is now an approved IAGLCWDC judge.  Attended the Hoedown last year as well as Stompede last October in San Francisco.  I’m looking forward to learn some more over the weekend ’cause I still love learning.  The day I stop learning will be the day to stop teaching.


Michel will be teaching East Coast Swing (Friday), Waltz (Saturday), and Progressive Two-Step (Saturday), as well as serving as a judge for the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).

Deron HayesDeron Hayes
(Couples) 


Deron Hayes discovered partner dancing as a teenager and immediately fell in love!  She has been an integral member of the Century Ballroom team since 2000 and has been teaching & performing Salsa since 2003.  In 2008, she discovered a new love: West Coast Swing.  She is currently an Advanced level national West Coast Swing competitor and is looking forward to tackling many more competitions in the future.  Besides challenging herself to be a better dancer through performing and competing, Deron is passionate about growing the local dance community and teaching all levels of dancer.  She loves being a part of people’s social dance journey and watching how it transforms their lives.


Deron & Justin will also be teaching on the West Coast Swing at Sea cruise this September!

John HellerJohn Heller
(Yoga) 


Having practiced yoga for over 26 years, John Heller graduated from the Samadhi Yoga Teacher Training in 2000 and Massage Certification from NW Academy For The Healing Arts 2012.  John has been inspired and influenced by the teachings of T.K.V. Desikachar, Swami Vishnudevananda, Swami Sivanda, B.K.S. Iyengar, Asokananda (Harold Brust) and Suzuki Roshi.  He has studied and practiced Zen meditation for five months at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center and shorter practice periods at Zen Center in San Fransisco.  John has also practiced several martial arts which include Aikido, Tak Kwon Do, and Kung Fu.  As a result, John’s yoga practice is Zen in nature and true to the science of Yoga with a warriors heart.


John will be teaching Yoga (Sunday).

Sara HilbrichSara Hilbrich
(Couples) 


Sara Hilbrich was dragged, kickin’ and screamin’ onto the Laces (Sacto, CA) dance floor for her first two-step in the mid-90s and instantly became a country dance addict.  In 2005, after moving to DC, Sara entered her first competitions in country couples and mainstream West Coast Swing.  Since then, she’s regularly competed (and placed) as both a leader and a follower.  Now in DC, Sara runs weekly LGBT West Coast Swing classes with Mel Coleman and is a founding member of the RolePlay swing team.


Sara will be teaching Two-Step Translation (Friday), Lead/Follow Connection (Friday), and East Coast Swing (Saturday).

Justin HirschyJustin Hirschy
(Couples) 


Justin Hirschy discovered his love for dance in 2006 when he started Ballroom dancing.  He found Salsa in 2007 and has been a Salsaholic every since.  His most recent endeavor is West Coast Swing, and he has been competing in conventions along the West Coast for the past two years, most recently placing 2nd at Easter Swing!  Justin is passionate about the lead/follow aspect of social dancing and loves to pass on his joy of dance.


Deron & Justin will also be teaching on the West Coast Swing at Sea cruise this September!

Klint KendrickKlint Kendrick
(Couples) 


Klint Kendrick started country-western dancing almost five years ago when a man who saw his cowboy hat mistook him for somebody who knew what the hell he was doing and dragged him onto the floor for a spin.  After taking several months to recover from that trauma, he found that others mistook the cowboy hat for dance ability and started asking him to explain how he did certain moves.  The ever-present cowboy hat has lulled enough Cuff regulars into a false sense of security, and Klint now gets a few chances a quarter to teach beginning dancers that a cowboy hat and a smile can get them mistaken for experts too.


Klint will be teaching San Francisco-style Two-Step(Saturday, replacing Marek Kociolek).

Michael KelsonMichael Kelson
(Couples, DJ Musicality) 


Michael Kelson has been teaching country-western dance for over ten years.  He started dancing at the Timberline in Seattle in 1992.  In 1994, he moved to San Francisco and was invited to teach at the city’s (then) country-western dance bar, the Rawhide II.  He later was an active participant and instructor with Sundance Saloon, and danced with the San Francisco Saddletramps.  Michael is a first place winner in the California Open Dancesport Championships for Same-Sex dancers in country-western Two-Step, country-western Waltz, and West Coast Swing.  He is happy to be back in Seattle where he is a founding member of the Rain Country Dance Association, and is actively teaching in the GLBTQ community.  Michael teaches country-western Two-Step, West Coast Swing, line dances, and other dances for Rain Country.


Michael will be teaching DJ Musicality (2 hours, Friday) and West Coast Swing Bootcamp (3 hours, Saturday).

Hallie KuppermanHallie Kupperman
(Couples) 


Hallie Kuperman has been teaching social dance since 1994.  She began teaching under the company name Swing Girls, which was dedicated to teaching “lesbian, gay, bi, and non-homophobic folks”.  From there, she opened the Century Ballroom in 1997 and hasn’t stopped dancing since.  Currently she teaches Salsa, West Coast Swing, and all of the Queer classes when they are offered.


Hallie will be teaching Lindy (Saturday).

Ari LevittAri Levitt
(Couples, Judge) 


Ari is well-known for his fun, energetic, and delightful classes that inspire students with a love and passion for dance.  He has been teaching and performing nationally and internationally for over 25 years.  Ari is the co-founder and director of “Waltz Week in Vienna” and “The New Zealand Dance Adventure” and is a leading innovator and instructors in the areas of “fusion” Blues, Waltz, Swing, and Night Club Two-Step.


Off the dance floor, Ari is a physician on faculty at Singularity University’s prestigious “Future Med”, a pioneer in the field of “Experiential Wellness Medicine” which uses dance movement, technique, and connection as a modality for diagnosing and treating people.  You can learn more about Ari at http://www.rolluptherug.com or http://www.futuremed2020.com.

John LindoJohn Lindo
(Couples, Judge) 


After beginning in country-western dance in 1992, John Lindo quickly made his mark on the West Coast Swing circuit by garnering an astonishing number of awards and championships in Jack-and-Jills and Strictly Swings.  John is among the best-know west coast swing dancers in the world, earning an astonishing number of awards and championships trophies.  He is sought after internationally for his expertise in teaching and judging, and has visited more than a dozen countries in the past twelve months teaching people how to swing.  John resides in California and New Jersey, and is an influential presence in the New York City West Coast Swing scene.


John will be teaching West Coast Swing (Friday) (twice) and WCS Musicality (Friday), as well as serving as a judge for the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).

Judy McDonaldJudy McDonald
(Line, Technique) 


Judy McDonald is an accomplished dance instructor, judge, and choreographer who has instructed in jazz, tap, and line dance for the past 33 years.  She has choreographed many line dances that are danced worldwide, including Sweet Memories, So Long, Cool Whip, and Dipstick.  Judy offers full day workshops as well as sessions on creative teaching techniques, insights into choreography, and dance technique.  Her positive learning environment and easy-going manner encourages participants to feel comfortable and enjoy the experience of learning to dance.  (website)

Michael MetzgerMichael Metzger
(Line) 


Michael Metzger (Oakland, CA) found his love for country music and dancing seven years ago, and it quickly became a passion.  He loves to share his joy by teaching others, and is honored to be included at the Emerald City Hoedown.  He has been a featured instructor at Sundance Saloon in San Francisco, and at Gays for Patsy and Dirty Water Saloon in Boston.


Michael will be teaching the line dances “50 Ways” (Friday) and “Ain’t No Other Man” (Saturday).

Tony NewTony New 
(Line)


I started dancing way back during the disco period, but didn’t get back involved with dance until August of 2001 when the Texas Twisters formed a dance team.  I began competing first in line, then adding ProAm and Couples.  I’m an eight-time UCWDC World Champion, 5 in line and 3 in couples, and a multi-time ACDA National Champion.  I teach line dance, both privates and groups, all over the North Texas area.  For more information, visit http://www.txcowboydancer.com.

Rob grew up hating country music until one day a few years ago, he walked into a gay bar and saw a group of men doing the two-step.  Country music and two-stepping have been his obsession ever since… and he has the cowboy drag to prove it.  Rob joins us from San Francisco, where he has been dancing at the Sundance Saloon every Thursday and Sunday evening for the last five years.  Unlike some of our other instructors, Rob is not a professional dance instructor but he does teach adults in his work at The Gap.


Rob will be teaching Shadow (Saturday).

Sara PadillaSara Padilla
(Technique) 


I completed the three-year teacher certification training at the American Center for the Alexander Technique in New York City in 1995 and I am a member of the American Society of the Alexander Technique (AmSAT).  Lifetime involvement with the human body and movement as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer inform my work.  In addition to my teacher certification, I hold a Bachelors Degree in Dance and Liberal Arts from Portland State University.  As a faculty member in the dance departments at Lewis & Clark College and Portland State University, I taught dance, improvisation and repertory.  As a guest artist I performed, lectured and taught dance at various institutions across the country.


Sara will be teaching Alexander Technique (Friday).

Dave & Jimmi SerflingDave & Jimmi Serfling
(Couples) 


Dave is a Professional DJ as well as Dance Instructor.  He has been teaching dance classes all over the Puget Sound since 1988.  He enjoys teaching many types of dance besides Country, including Swing, Latin, Ballroom, Night Club, and Line Dancing.  He owns and operates The Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn, where he teaches and is the regular DJ on Fridays.


Dave will be assisted by his wife, Jimmi Serfling.


Dave & Jimmi will be teaching Progressive Two-Step (Saturday), Triple Two/Shuffle (Saturday), and Progressive Two Step (Saturday).

Meredith SteadMeredith Stead
(Couples, Non-Profit Forum, Emcee) 


Meredith Stead ran her own dance studio in Manhattan for over a decade, together with husband John Knapp.  They were finalists or titleholders in several partner dance styles and have Broadway, film, television, and video game credits.  Meredith judged the 1994 Gay Games dance competition and co-produced the first LGBTQ dance weekend on the East Coast.  She is a charter member of the North American Same Sex Partner Dance Association and teaches for the Big Apple Ranch. 
Meredith has won several same-sex or reverse-role dance titles including Show Dance, Country Western styles, and Standard (bronze at the 2010 Gay Games).

 

 


Meredith will be teaching Waltz (Friday), Hustle (Friday), Non-Profit Status for your Dance Club (Friday), Progressive Two-Step (Friday), and Lead/Follow Switching (Sunday), as well as serving as emcee for the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).  (Whew!)

Susanna SteinSusanna Stein 
(Couples)


Susanna Stein began country-western dancing when a friend dragged her to the Rawhide in San Francisco.  She quickly fell in love with two-stepping, and grew to love country music.  In 1997, she co-founded the Big Apple Ranch, NYC’s weekly country-western dance.  Susanna has danced in and choreographed for the Manhattan Prairie Dogs, and has competed in two-step and swing.  She has somewhat curtailed her dancing activity since having three children, but still teaches regularly at the Big Apple Ranch and Sundance Stompede.

 


Susanna will be teaching Lead/Follow Switching (Sunday).

Rosa TuriRosa Turi
(Line) 


Rosa has been a Country–Western DJ and Line dance Instructor for over 14 years.  Known for her hip-hopish dance style she teaches and choreographs line dances to all types of music.  In the past years you have probably encountered her DJ-ing at Reno, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Diego Rodeos, as well as Las Vegas, San Diego, Orange County, and Long Beach Pride Festivals.  Rosa currently teaches and DJ’s at Cowboy Country, Hamburger Mary’s, and Urban Mo’s.  This is her first time with us here at the Emerald City Hoedown!  Debuting her new line dance “Tornado”.


Rosa will be teaching the line dances “Redneck Angel” and “Tornado” (Saturday).

Croft VaughnCroft Vaughn
(Stretching, Line) 


Croft Vaughn is the reigning IAGLCWDC Advance Line Dance Champion for 2011 and 2012.  He began dancing at the Big Apple Ranch in 2007.  He was a member of the fabulous and world renowned Manhattan Prairie Dogs for three years.  He is also the Diving Coach for TNYA, NYC’s LGBT Aquatics Club. Croft will be debuting a new line dance, “Gay Pirates” and leading a delicious Saturday morning stretch class.


Croft will be teaching Dynamic Stretching (Saturday) and the line dance “Gay Pirates” (Sunday).

Paul WilliamPaul William (Boot Care) 


Paul is Northwest Community Bootblack 2013.  He began bootblacking with the PDX Bootblacks since he first entered the leather community in 2010.  He has taught a number of classes on leather care and basics of bootblacking, as well as more advanced classes on how to receive leather care in public.  His absolute favourite cowboy boots are his absolute favourite boots to care for because of their variation of material and detail.


Paul will be teaching Boot Care (Friday) and bootblacking Friday and Saturday nights.

Kate BovitchKate Bovitch 


Kate Bovitch has been two-stepping for a year and a half.  Her interest in partner dancing started with East Coast Swing in a western-themed Irish pub on the island of Okinawa when she was in high school.  She DJs line dances for Rain Country a couple times a month.


Kate will be DJing Line Dancing (Friday).

Jim DrewJim Drew 


Jim DJs for Rain Country at the Cuff Complex in Seattle, and has DJ’ed country at the Seattle Eagle, Swank (Kent), and Neighbours Nightclub as well.  Outside of Seattle, Jim has DJ’ed for Club Bolo and at the 1st World OutGames in Montréal, and at hoedowns in Virginia Beach, Tampa, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.


Jim will be DJing Country Couples (Saturday).

Terry FeltsTerry Felts 


Terry has stepped up to the DJ plate and now DJs for Rain Country once or twice a month.


Terry will be do fill-in DJing during the weekend in various rooms.

Keith GehrigKeith Gehrig 


Keith Gehrig began two-stepping and line dancing in Long Beach at Floyd’s in 1985.  He moved to the Northwest in 1987 and began dancing with DJ Jim Detwiler and teacher Maxcy Moon.  He helped open the original Timberline and started square dancing that same year.  During the ’90s, he got distracted by other things but returned when Timberline Spirits opened.  He started attending Cuff Country regularly to pick up the line dances he’d missed, he hasn’t left, and now he’s in the DJ booth, too.


Keith will be DJing Line Dancing (Saturday) and the Sunday evening dance.

Hagan KoHagan Ko 


Hagan is from San Francisco, but started line dancing back in 1995 in Tacoma.  He stopped dancing for a few years until he was re-introduced to country western dancing in 2004 at Oil Can Harry’s in Los Angeles.  In the last few years, he has medaled at various IAGLCWDC and IGRA dance competitions, in both line dancing and in couples.  Always hoping to become a better dancer, he travels extensively across the country to attend various line dance & country western dance events.  He currently teaches a weekly advanced line dance class with Wine Country Line Dance in San Rafael, California.  Last summer, he received his Level I instructor certification with the National Teacher’s Association for Country Western Dancing.  More information about his hectic dance schedule can be found at HaganLineDance.com.


Hagan will be DJing Line Dancing (Thursday), Line Dancing (Friday), and Late Night Line Dancing (Friday).

Scott LindauerScott Lindauer 


Scott Lindauer works currently in sourcing and contracting, and previously worked in promotions and public relations.  He is new to swing DJing, but is calling on his previous experience as a radio and club DJ to “swing out” into this new venture.  Also new to swing dancing, he hopes to use his understanding of musicality and love of performing to be an stand-out member of the swing community.

Ray NutterRay Nutter 


Ray Nutter started country dancing in San Diego (at the straight bars), but quickly landed at the Timberline when coming up (and coming out) to Seattle in the mid-90s.  He’s also a regular at Cuff Country on Friday nights.  Ray is the newest member of our DJ team, taking to it like a cowboy to his saddle!


Ray will be DJing Country Couples (Thursday) and dancing before and after the IAGLCDWC dance competition (Saturday).

Johnny QJohnny Q 


A former rocket scientist at NASA, Johnny is a best-selling author who invests and consults with start-ups in Austin and Silicon Valley.  He’s an avid dancer and swing DJ who is spinning our late night dance room all weekend long.  He’s also single.  :)


Johnny will be DJing Late Night Swing (Friday), Late Night Swing (Saturday), and Swing Dancing (Sunday), and teaching WCS Musicality (Friday).
